Wind Turbine blade protection

Wind Turbine blade protection

Novara Tech is addressing one of the most persistent and costly challenges facing the wind industry and especially offshore wind farms: leading-edge erosion. Offshore wind blades operate in some of the harshest environments on Earth, with blade tips reaching speeds exceeding 300 km/h, which dramatically accelerates erosion. Without effective protection, blades can sustain significant damage within just a few years of a projected 25-year service life — reducing energy output, increasing maintenance costs, and threatening the long-term economics of offshore wind projects.

At the core of Novara's technology is an integrated metallic erosion shield developed using plastic deformation and adhesive spraying processes. Unlike polymer tapes or coatings — which degrade, wrinkle, shed microplastics, and require repeated replacement — Novara's metallic shields deliver superior erosion resistance, as validated in both helicopter industry applications and laboratory rain-erosion testing. Each shield is precisely tailored to its specific blade geometry, manufactured autonomously in controlled environments to minimize defects, and designed to concentrate wear at the surface rather than the adhesive interface — extending structural integrity across the full blade service life.

Critically, Novara's shields are integrated directly into the blade mould during manufacturing — co-cured or co-bonded to the blade substrate in a single production step. This eliminates aerodynamic discontinuities, resolves the flexibility mismatch between metallic and composite materials that has historically made metallic protection impractical, and removes the risk of shield detachment that would leave the blade fully exposed.

For blades already in service, Novara deploys a robotic leading-edge repair and shield application system capable of operating on-site at offshore installations. This eliminates the need for expensive jack-up vessels and removes rope-access technicians from high-risk working conditions — replacing manual intervention with a precise, repeatable, and scalable robotic process that dramatically reduces the cost and risk of blade maintenance campaigns.

Together, Novara's manufacturing-integrated shield and robotic field repair platform create a full lifecycle solution — protecting blades from their first day of operation and maintaining that protection throughout their working lives. As offshore wind expands rapidly and turbines grow larger, Novara's technology is positioned to become an essential component of a more durable, efficient, and economically viable offshore wind industry.
